A Look Back at Soz:
Soz was a character I made quite mindlessly-- I simply wanted to see what Monolith was about, so I threw together a character and called it a day. Yes-- I did intend for them to succumb to the tadpole before I left for college, and yes-- I did intend for the character to pass away in a tragic circumstance.
However...
I never *once* thought I'd play this character as much as I had. I never thought people would take such interest in a character, and provide such enjoyable character development. Single-handedly over the course of a few months, the story of this character quickly became something I enjoyed more than any story I've written. It was in other characters, I found a story more enjoyable than most scripted and railroaded stories I've been a part of on numerous servers, and by a -landslide-.
It even reached the point where I did change the intentions for the character-- I implemented a three-roll failure system to see how Soz faired against the growing tadpole at hand. A number of rolls, and the first to hit either 1 or 20 (out of a d20) decided whether it was a failure or not. And, whilst I had hit three failures in a row, the effort and time -others- had put into my character genuinely made this story more enjoyable than anything I could have made on my own. And whilst there was a chance for Soz to live on, and even extensions to their life made by the actions of those around the character-- Both the fate of three nat 1's being rolled, as well as my oncoming departure to college inevitably brought Soz to their end.
A special thanks to folks like simpleape, dice , psiko911 , DruCart , and many others for making this character the single most enjoyable story I've ever had the honor to be a part of.
Whilst I doubt Soz is going to have the sort of comeback that Lo had-- I am genuinely happy with the character's story, even if cut short by a tragic end and the oncoming of a college move.
But hey-- Who's to say that death is the end of a person's story?
So remember, folks--
It's not the fancy scripts, or the power you achieve that makes a character good and enjoyable-- Nor is it the superiority one may hold over another.
Instead-- It's the authenticity of interactions between people. It's the willingness to put effort out to all for nothing more than the sake of IC growth, rather than the garnering of OOC clout.
It's the willingness to write a story that helps others write their own, rather than to play the hero of all stories.
